Essex County emergency food distribution on Nov. 12 to be held in Newark’s Weequahic Park

The 1,000 boxes of food that will be distributed are meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford food.

Bloomfield shredding event to take place Saturday, November 7

The township will be holding another free shredding event for residents on Saturday, November 7 at Pulaski Park. Pulaski Park is located at 24 Mt. Vernon Ave. and the event will take place between 9:00am and 12:00pm rain or shine.

Bloomfield taking proactive approach to water safety

The Bloomfield Water Department has contracted John Garcia Construction Co. to inspect the water lines of approximately 500 residences mainly in the Merkel Street, Foster Street and Ivanhoe Terrace area. The inspection is out of an abundance of caution and should any lead service lines be found, the lead will be removed.

A repavement project will begin the week of November 9 on Glenwood Avenue from Six Points to the East Orange border. The project is being funded through a NJDOT Local Aid grant and Transit Village grant.

Essex County Correctional Facility Civilian Task Force public hearing will be on Nov. 12

The Essex County Correctional Facility Civilian Task Force will host a public hearing on Thursday, November 12th. The focus of this public hearing will be on addiction treatment, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and mental health services available at the Essex County Correctional Facility. Due to the increase in COVID-19 transmission in New Jersey and to promote social distancing, the meeting will be held remotely as follows: Date: Thursday, November 12, 2020 Time: 6 to 8 p.m. Internet Livestream: To Be Announced "The Task Force is committed to thoroughly and rigorously examining how the Correctional Facility treats inmates and detainees coping with addiction and mental health issues. Our upcoming hearing will focus on how best to ensure and enhance the health and wellbeing of the persons we serve," Task Force Chairman and Former Governor Jim McGreevey said. During the hearing, Task Force members will be interviewing relevant ECCF staff and gathering information, which will ultimately inform the items of inquiry addressed by the Task Force. This is the second of three public hearing scheduled this fall by the Civilian Task Force. The first meeting was held in September and focused on the medical services provided at the ECCF. The intent of the nine-member task force is to provide "transparency and accountability" of the ECCF staff, to protect the "lives, health, safety and rights of all people confined at the ECCF" and ensure the "conditions of their confinement are safe, sanitary, respectful and humane," according to language in the ordinance. It will act independently of County government and have the authority to inspect the ECCF, interview corrections officers, inmates, detainees, and review systematic issues and concerns. Members of the Task Force were nominated by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and appointed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders in June through an established advice and consent procedure that is used to fill vacancies on all county boards and commissions.

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced the upcoming schedule of Coronavirus testing sites sponsored by Essex County. The tests are are being offered to Essex County residents free of charge. To make an appointment, please visit www.EssexCovid.org or call 973-877-8456. "Our COVID-19 testing site in Weequahic Park has successfully provided Essex County residents with local access to testing. Through the hard work of our County leadership, and our health professionals, our Satellite Testing Sites will now provide us with the ability to bring COVID-19 testing to multiple municipalities throughout the county. It is clear that expanding our testing capabilities is the proper course of action, and I thank and congratulate our leadership for their tireless work in putting this together. Lastly, I implore all of our residents to take advantage of the Satellite Testing Sites and get themselves tested," Freeholder Vice President Wayne Richardson said. Essex County residents with or without symptoms are encouraged to get tested. Residents age 8 years and older are welcome to get tested. Residents are encouraged to get retested if they have taken the swab or saliva tests 14 days ago or more and have received negative test results. Testing is provided free of charge; health insurance is not required. To make an appointment, residents should visit www.EssexCOVID.org or call 973-877-8456. They will be required to complete a short questionnaire. When finished, they will be provided with an appointment time and a confirmation number. Residents should bring the confirmation number with them. They are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment. Residents taking the COVID-19 saliva test should not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum 30 minutes prior to arrival.

Mayor Venezia is reminding residents that are not currently subscribed to township communication tools to subscribe now. The tools keep residents up to date throughout the year with non-emergency related information.
