Essex County Fishing Derbies to take place at multiple parks in Essex County

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs invite the public to participate in Essex County's 2022 Fishing Derbies. The free events will be held in seven locations in the Essex County Parks System.

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo Closes Exhibits to Protect Birds from Avian Influenza

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced that all outdoor exhibits featuring birds at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo will promptly begin to close due to the emergence of the newly discovered highly pathogenic avian influenza. The exhibits are being closed as a precautionary measure to protect the birds from exposure to the influenza and to help stop the spread of the disease.

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo introduces new groundhog at 2022 Groundhog Day Event

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. introduced Essex Edwina as the new weather prognosticator during the Groundhog Day event at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo on Wednesday, February 2nd. Essex Edwina took over for Essex Ed, who has entered retirement after having Edwina as his apprentice during the pandemic. During the 10 a.m. event, Edwina did not see her shadow which means spring weather is expected to come six weeks early. In addition, she picked the Los Angeles Rams to win Super Bowl LVI.

Essex County Civilian Task Force changed to virtual meeting for Jan. 29

The Essex County Correctional Facility Civilian Task Force will host a public meeting on Saturday, January 29th to discuss the use of special housing units at the Essex County Correctional Facility. Because of the pandemic and rising cases of the omicron variant, the meeting will be held remotely.

Essex County proposes honoring the late Cleo Hill with ECC gym naming

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced a proposal to name the gymnasium at Essex County College after Cleo Hill, Sr. The letter outlining the proposal was signed by DiVincenzo and Essex County Commissioner Rufus I. Johnson and sent to Essex County College Board of Trustees President Marion Bolden and ECC President Dr. Augustine Boakye on January 11, 2022. A native of Newark, Mr. Hill was the first player from a historically black college or university to be drafted by an NBA team in the first round. After his professional playing career, he became a very successful men's basketball coach and athletic director at Essex County College.

The Essex County Correctional Facility Civilian Task Force will host a public meeting on Saturday, January 29th to discuss the use of special housing units at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Essex County emergency food distribution event in Newark Dec. 21

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Essex County Board of County Commissioners will present a special Holiday Emergency Food Distribution Event to help families negatively impacted by the Coronavirus. There will be 1,000 frozen turkeys and boxes of non-perishable food distributed. The program is meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford food.

Essex County’s partners with Rutgers for Community Health Assessment

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites Essex County residents to participate in an Essex County Community Health Assessment Survey. The results of the survey will help the Essex County Public Health Office identify health issues affecting the Essex County community and create a public health plan to raise awareness and promote wellness. Residents can access the on-line survey at www.EssexCountyNJ.org and clicking on the "Community Health Assessment Survey" link. Responses will be collected until March 31, 2022.

There will be 1,500 frozen turkeys and boxes of non-perishable food distributed at each event. The program is meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford food.

Essex County announces COVID-19 Homelessness Prevention Grant

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced $1 million in grant funding is available to support shelter operations and street outreach activities to prevent homelessness. The funds are targeted to help shelters and community-based agencies that have been providing homeless prevention services during the pandemic. The application deadline is Monday, December 6th at 6 p.m. The application can be accessed at www.EssexCountyNJ.org and clicking on the "2021 Essex County COVID-19 Assistance Grant for Homeless Prevention" link.
