Community members gathered at West Orange Town Hall Jan. 5 to celebrate Palestinian culture after Mayor Susan McCartney canceled a planned Palestinian flag raising. Council members Bill Rutherford and Asmeret Ghebremicael attended the event that took place following the canceled flag raising that would have paralleled the township’s Israeli flag raising following an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. Since then, more than 23,000 Palestinians have been killed and 59,000 injured by the Israeli military, including nearly 10,000 children.
