Who is running for New Jersey senate and assembly in the 34th legislative district
New Jersey’s 34th District includes Belleville, Bloomfield, Orange, East Orange, Glen Ridge and Nutley. Here’s what we heard from its candidates for state senate and assembly in the 2023 election.
This story is being republished with permission of NJ Spotlight as part of a 2023 NJ News Commons election reporting collaboration that included The Jersey Bee and other local news publishers.
Based in Essex County, New Jersey’s 34th Legislative District’s boundaries changed slightly due to the recent redistricting. It covers Belleville, Bloomfield, Orange, East Orange, Glen Ridge and Nutley.
After redistricting in 2001, the 34th became a Democratic-leaning district and that continues in its current incarnation. About 52% of registered voters are Democrats, compared to 11% who are Republicans. Most of the rest are unaffiliated.
Redistricting did cause a shakeup, moving Sen. Nia Gill into the 27th District, where she lost the primary contest. Instead, Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake, who founded the non-profit Essex Community Land Trust and took office in 2018, and faces Republican Joseph Belnome of Belleville.
Assemblyman Thomas Giblin’s hometown was also redistricted out of the 34th and he chose to retire after 18 years in office. For the two open Assembly slots, the Essex County Democrats have chosen Carmen Morales, principal of Newark Tech High School and a resident of Belleville, and Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia. The Republican candidates are Clenard Childress Jr., an East Orange pastor who has run in the past, and James McGuire of Nutley.

Joseph Belnome – Republican

Age: 48
Hometown: Belleville
Occupation: Property maintenance inspector
Personal background: Joseph Belnome is a dedicated and accomplished individual hailing from Newark, New Jersey, and raised in the neighboring town of Belleville. He has built a remarkable life rooted in his strong work ethic, community engagement and commitment to public service. Born to parents who hailed from the same town in Sicily, Joseph witnessed firsthand their journey to American citizenship upon immigrating to the United States. In his earlier years, Joseph honed his skills as a journeyman bricklayer in Local #4, where his craftsmanship and attention to detail were highly regarded. With a deep passion for construction and ensuring the safety of buildings, Joseph transitioned his career and now serves as an inspector in the Building Department of Belleville Township. Through this role, he plays a vital part in upholding safety standards and ensuring the compliance of structures, fostering a secure environment for residents and businesses alike. Joseph’s dedication to public service extends beyond his professional endeavors. As a district leader for the Belleville Republican Party, he plays a pivotal role in shaping local politics and advocating for the principles and values he holds dear. He has actively contributed his time and expertise to various mayoral and Board of Education campaigns, striving to effect positive change and improve the quality of life for the community he calls home.
Political background: District leader for Belleville Republican Party.
Why are you running for office? We are a nation in decline. Radical left policies, such as open borders, are straining public services and creating a booming enterprise for cartels to traffic women and children. Our state is allowing the sexualization of children as young as kindergarten by exposing them to sexually explicit books in our libraries and insisting on talking to children about their gender. What I’ve witnessed from the pandemic in this state can only be described as tyranny. Using nonsensical solutions with unproven methods, such as masks and social distancing, in addition to basic mandates of newly created experimental vaccines at the same time opening our election to fraud with ballot boxes and mandatory mail-in ballots – I’ve had enough.
Key election issue: Parental rights. Specifically I’m fighting to stop the state from keeping secrets from parents about their children in regards to changing their gender.
I will introduce a bill to make it illegal to medically change your gender until the age of 25.
Example of a successful project: As vice president of a civic association, we successfully repurposed pallets into planters and placed them around our community.
Example of a challenge faced: It’s challenging living in tyranny. With perseverance and prayer for new leadership and now running for office to make a difference, I shall overcome.
On NJ’s gun laws: The Second Amendment shall not be infringed. New Jersey gun laws are way too strict and have done nothing to reduce any crimes. They only affect and restrict law-abiding legal gun owners.
On the Murphy administration’s climate change proposals: Did not answer
On housing affordability and property taxes: I would never allow a moratorium to not pay rent while homeowners still need to pay their mortgages. I am open to restricting corporations from buying residential homes in our communities. This would make sure corporations don’t manipulate the housing markets and reduce the cost of housing and rents.
Final thoughts: I am happy to take on this challenge. I consider myself an America first candidate. If you believe in parental rights, protecting children from being sexualized, keeping biological boys out of girls’ bathrooms, sports and locker rooms, I am your candidate and appreciate your support.

Clenard Childress Jr. – Republican

Age: 70
Hometown: Montclair
Occupation: Senior pastor
Personal background: Born and raised in Montclair, senior pastor for 34 years of the New Calvary Baptist Church of Newark, New Jersey. Graduate of Northern Baptist School of Religion, executive food sales for Acme Institutional, serving schools and corporate cafeterias in the northern New Jersey area. I am northeast director for LEARN, the Life Education and Resource Network, educating the African American community on health and productive lifestyle choices. I was awarded the NAACP community service award and lifetime achievement award by LEARN. Married to Regina. We have four children and live in East Orange.
Political background: I have been engaged in politics since 2005 and have run as a Democrat, Independant and ran for Congress 2021.
Why are you running for office? To create a change in Trenton and represent the citizens and their rights in government.
Key election issue: Parental rights.
School choice in education.
Example of a successful project: Creating a social activism organization, LEARN Northeast Community Organizers.
Example of a challenge faced: Creating a productive working environment for youth and seniors. We found open forums and home visitation brought about like-minded projects or ideas that were common ground desires.
On NJ’s gun laws: I would not change laws until the present ones are fully enforced.
On the Murphy administration’s climate change proposals: This nation has the resources to be self-sustaining and all sources should be pursued.
On housing affordability and property taxes: Rent control and raising the percentage of affordable housing units created in building projects.
Final thoughts: We must stop the insanity.
