Black students with IEPs suspended at disproportionate rate at Montclair schools, NJODE finds

Black students with Individualized Education Plans received more in-school and out-of-school suspensions at Montclair public schools compared to other students during 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25, according to the N.J. Department of Education. During the 2022-23 school year, Black students with IEPs accounted for 41 of 145 suspensions throughout the district, or almost 30% of all suspensions. The school district is required to allocate 15%, or about $150,000, of its federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funding to examine its disciplinary policies through December. Findings must be presented by January, and an action plan for next school year must follow.
