A 2020 settlement that ordered a court-supervised monitoring under the settlement between Black Parents Workshop and the South Orange-Maplewood School District ended in August, according to a letter from BPW President James Davis. The settlement sought to address inequitable treatment of Black students within the district, and the 2019 suit cited violations of federal and state laws, including the Civil Rights Act. Davis’ letter explains that the 2023 Rutgers Equity Audit includes recommendations meant to guide the district’s progress over the course of five years.

New Jersey Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell is under investigation over allegations of ethics violations, including offering state jobs, and inappropriate behavior towards women, according to New Jersey Globe, the New York Times, and NJ.com. Details of Caldwell’s misconduct are not yet available. Former N.J. Attorney General Christopher Porrino and Shontae Gray, a former assistant U.S. attorney, have been conducting the investigation and interviewing complainants, including state employees and potential witnesses.
