South Orange-Maplewood school board hired Nicole Schoening as business administrator. Schoening replaced Imani Moody, who resigned in the spring. Her contract runs through Jun. 30, 2027.

South Orange-Maplewood school district updated its bus service to improve reliability, according to Superintendent Jason Bing. Bus schedules are updated to align with new school start and end times, and routes are redesigned to shorten commute time for students. People can track school bus routes in real time with GPS because each bus now has Wayfinder tablets.

People can register for fall classes at South Orange’s Baird Community Center. Classes include yoga, bookmaking, cooking, and more. Classes are held at 5 Mead St.

Montclair Animal Shelter is reducing adoption fees by 50% through Aug. 15. People can visit the shelter every day from 1-4 p.m. except Wednesdays and Saturdays.

People can contribute to Out Montclair’s time capsule on Aug. 16. Contributions are accepted from 4-6 p.m. at Lackawanna Station. The capsule will be opened in 2076. Registration is required.

Newark filed a lawsuit against two property management companies for health violations and increasing rent beyond the city’s allowable limit. The companies are NJ Best Management LLC, which manages 380 South 6th St., and 380 S 6 LLC, which manages 378-386 South 6th St. It marks the first time the city is suing for money damages.

The family of a student enrolled at Glen Ridge’s Ridgewood Avenue School filed a lawsuit claiming that a teacher groomed and sexually harassed their child. The complaint was filed in N.J. Superior Court in Newark and claims that now-former fifth grade teacher Gerald White sexually abused the child when she was between the ages of 10 and 15. The lawsuit named Glen Ridge school board and then-Superintendent Kyle Arlington, among other district officials. The family is seeking $10 million and punitive damages over physical, emotional, and mental injuries and trauma.

New Jersey issued legal orders to investigate conditions at Delaney Hall, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement concentration camp in Newark. The legal orders, or investigative subpoenas, come less than one week after Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo died inside the facility. His mother said in an interview that he was not receiving proper medical care. Cornejo’s death marks the second detainee death inside Delaney Hall. The investigation will examine whether Geo Group, the prison company, employees are violating people’s civil rights. If violations are found, the state’s Attorney General’s Office will initiate a legal process that will require Geo Group to comply with N.J. law. People can submit relevant information to state officials by contacting the Affirmative Enforcement Unit.
