REGIONAL NEWS

New Jersey hospitals must continue to provide medical care to patients who cannot pay for treatment, according to a ruling by N.J. Supreme Court. The decision was made in response to a lawsuit filed by a group of 14 hospitals in 2017. The lawsuit claimed N.J.’s charity care law, which reimburses hospitals for a portion of the cost of care, violates state and federal protections that prevent governments from seizing certain private assets for public use without sufficient compensation. The N.J. Supreme Court ruled the law remains constitutional because hospitals have control over their property and supplies, and use it based on their judgment of patient needs.

More than 1.8 million N.J. residents enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program, known as NJ FamilyCare, will continue to receive care from Planned Parenthood following a federal ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani. The court decision blocks a provision in a federal tax and spending bill that would have withdrawn Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. Medicaid funding reimburses Planned Parenthood for services like pregnancy testing, STD testing, and breast exams, among others provided to beneficiaries of Medicaid, the largest program in the U.S. that provides medical services to low-income people.
