“Family Adventure Night: Decorate a T-Shirt” for school-age children and families planned by Maplewood library on Jul. 10 in the Hilton Branch. The event, scheduled from 6-7 p.m., will feature decorating plain cotton t-shirts or pillowcases. Attendees should bring a t-shirt or pillow case. Supplies are provided. Adults must accompany children.

Maplewood is hiring an assistant pool foreperson for the 2024 summer season. The position pays up to $27 per hour. Resumes and cover letters accepted by email.
Maplewood Township
Free concert planned by South Orange recreation on Jul. 10. A jazz, rock, and country band, Stuff Bros, will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Flood’s Hill. Food trucks available on site.

Children can join South Orange’s town-wide scavenger hunt through Jul. 31. Participants pick up a “bear paw” at 298 Walton Ave. or the Baird Center, find all 15 Smokey Bear images at South Orange businesses, return the completed “bear paw” to library locations by Jul. 31 for a chance to win a prize.

The number of N.J. public school students eligible for free or reduced-priced school meals will jump from 450,000 to 510,000 in September 2024 following an N.J. law signed in January that increases the program’s income limits. Under the Working Class Families Anti-Hunger Act, a family of four with a yearly income of less than $69,888 can qualify for school meal assistance. The total 510,000 students who are program-eligible represents more than a third of public school students in N.J.

Garden State Equality is accepting applications for youth entering grades 10-12 to join its 2024 leadership camp, “Changemakers Youth Leadership Initiative.” It will take place at Fairview Lake YMCA in Newton from Aug. 18-23. Attendees will participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops, discussion groups that challenge biases, and activities aimed at fostering a sense of social responsibility.
