Most N.J. police officers who attended the 2021 “Street Cop” training conference, which glorifies violence, have used force on people during arrests and encounters, a New Jersey Monitor examination reveals. Of the 240 officers in attendance, 72% used force at least once since October 2020 and more than 170 attendees used force 796 times total. Twenty-two officers recorded at least 10 use-of-force incidents, with two officers from Trenton, where the police department is under federal investigation, recording a combined 45 incidents. Although N.J. officers who attended the conference are mandated to be retrained, Street Cop has another training scheduled in Florida this April. Several states, including N.J., have barred officers from attending.
