Bloomfield Town Council appointed Councilman Ted Gamble as the interim mayor on Jan. 22, filling a vacancy after former mayor Michael Venezia resigned to accept an Assembly seat. Gamble won the council’s 4-2 vote against candidate Jenny Mundell, a councilwoman whose nomination won an undemocratic straw poll at a Bloomfield Democratic County Committee meeting led by Venezia, the committee’s chairman. According to Gamble, the straw poll was unprecedented and an attempt to subvert the parliamentary process. Gamble and Mundell will be running against each other in the Democratic primary election on Jun. 4.
