The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (or CARES Act) is federal legislation passed on March 26 in response to the economic crisis sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the elements of the law is a 120-day moratorium on evictions and lates fees for any property with a federally backed mortgage or participating in any one of a dozen federal housing programs like public housing or Section 8.

The federal ban came after local evictions and foreclosures were temporarily suspended by Essex County before Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order establishing a statewide moratorium. The county and state action does not include a ban on late fees.

The following properties are among those in Bloomfield where renters cannot be charged late fees until July 27, when the 120-day period expires.
