Sponsorship and Advertising Policy
This policy explains how The Jersey Bee protects our independence and the trust of our community while working with advertisers and sponsors. The Jersey Bee decides what it reports and how based on information needs that we identify. The opinions of advertisers or sponsors do not direct our news coverage. Funds from advertising and sponsorship allow The Jersey Bee to cover operating costs and provide products and services.
Policy
The Jersey Bee does not endorse any product or service included in advertisements or promoted by a sponsor in The Jersey Bee’s products. News reporting is not directed by commercial interests or specific arrangements with advertisers or sponsors. Advertisements may not be deceptive or misleading and must be verifiable. Advertisements should clearly identify the advertiser or sponsor and the products or services promoted.
Scope
This policy covers all of The Jersey Bee’s products and services, including websites, newsletters, direct messaging, social media accounts, or print publications.
Responsibilities
Advertisers and sponsors are responsible for self-verifying their eligibility. The Jersey Bee’s executive staff is responsible for ensuring compliance with this policy.
Procedure
The Jersey Bee has the right to decline any advertisement or sponsored message that, at its sole discretion, is incompatible with its mission or inconsistent with its values and may stop a previously accepted advertisement for the same reason. Ads are subject to review by staff at The Jersey Bee. Advertisers and sponsors do not direct what, when, or how The Jersey Bee reports on news subjects.
- All advertisements/sponsorships must clearly state they are advertising or sponsored messages with the name of the sponsoring entity. Examples include:
- ”The Jersey Bee’s news service is supported through sponsorship by [SPONSOR NAME].”
- “Supported by [SPONSOR NAME].”
- Ads containing a URL in the body must link to that URL.
- Landing pages cannot immediately close, minimize, or redirect after opening or exhibit any spam behavior recognized as malware.
- Ads must directly relate to the content on the landing page.
- Ads must represent the company, product, or service being advertised.
Messages we don’t run
The following types of sponsor messages or ads are ones we prohibit:
- False, misleading, fraudulent, or deceptive.
- Insulting, harassing, or threatening to individuals or groups of people.
- Containing, facilitating, or promoting discrimination against any individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation, disability, age, or any other protected characteristic.
- Promoting organizations that excessively contribute to environmental pollution and climate change.
- Promoting products or services that excessively harm or exploit animals.
- Promoting organizations with exploitative labor practices, like paying unfair wages or withholding benefits.
- Promoting the exploitation of public goods, such as housing, water, education, healthcare, or other essential needs.
- Promoting people or organizations that have been implicated in human rights abuses.
- Promoting organizations that support or profit from incarceration.
- Promoting the manufacture or sale of weapons, including firearms.
- Promoting gambling.
We avoid these types of sponsorship and advertising to our values and mission are aligned with those of our sponsors and that we are not inadvertently supporting organizations that engage in harmful practices.
Violations
Violations of this policy may result in consequences, including but not limited to the removal of the ad, suspension of advertising privileges, or termination of the advertiser’s contract.
Right to modify this policy
The Jersey Bee reserves the right to modify or terminate this policy. Any modifications or terminations will be communicated to the relevant parties in a timely manner.
