Belleville school board installed EV chargers at each school within the district. It is also adopting a districtwide EV charging policy, according to a press release from EZ Ride, which awarded the district with a EV Adoption Leadership recognition.

Free fishing derby for youth ages 15 and younger planned with Essex County parks on Jun. 3 in Newark. The event is from 5-7:30 p.m. at Weequahic Park. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles, bait, and chairs. There is no rain date. Prizes will be awarded.

Essex County residents can shred paper items for free on Jun. 6 in Cedar Grove. Paper shredding is from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Essex County Public Works Department, 99 W. Bradford Ave. A list of accepted items is available online.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency after at least $300 million in agricultural damages were lost from freezing temperatures between Apr. 19 and Apr. 22. The estimates were made by the N.J. Department of Agriculture and the Farm Service Agency County Committees. The state of emergency authorizes local agencies across all counties to preserve farm operations and protect the state’s agricultural capacity. It also is meant to open funding from the federal government. The executive order is available online for viewing.

RWJBarnabas Health established N.J.’s first street medicine program on May 19 at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth. It will bring health care and services to homeless people in Elizabeth. Patients will be connected to physical, mental, and behavioral health services as well as transportation to local clinics for long-term support. RWJBarnabas said it will expand to other areas in the state to improve care among N.J.’s unhoused population.
