Nutley library will reopen on May 26. It has been closed since February because of extensive water damage from a water break.

Bloomfield Superintendent of Schools Sal Goncalves received the 2026 Educational Leader of the Year award. It was awarded by the N.J. Association of Educational Leaders. Goncalves is retiring from the district on Jun. 30. Joseph Fleres will serve as superintendent starting Jul. 1.

Students in grades 4-12 can register for Montclair Film’s summer academy program, scheduled to start Jul. 6. Attendees will learn about the fundamentals of filmmaking and produce films together. The program ends Aug. 21. Registration is available online.

“Stories Without Borders,” an immigrant storytelling event, planned with We Start Here and Make the Road NJ on May 26 at SOPAC. It begins at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit Make the Road NJ to support immigrant rights advocacy and legal aid for N.J. families. Tickets are available online for purchase.

South Orange Performing Arts Center

Essex County residents can complete a pre-test for English for Speakers of Other Languages conversation-level classes on May 28 at Maplewood library’s Hilton Branch. Registration is available online. The pre-test is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Classes are Thursdays from Jun. 11 to Jul. 16 at the Hilton Branch. Registration for the pre-test is available online.

Essex House, a restaurant and banquet hall in West Orange, will be demolished and replaced by a mixed-use building. It will have a commercial ground floor and 95 residential units, with 19 set aside for affordable housing. It is unclear when the restaurant will be demolished.

Montclair library’s book sale is on May 23 at the Bellevue Branch. It is from 12-6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the library.

New Jersey local police officers will increase enforcement of seatbelt safety laws through May 31 as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign. Police checkpoints and presence will increase on N.J. roads. Seatbelt violations can result in a summons and $46 fine.
