Nutley library will reopen on May 26. It has been closed since February because of extensive water damage from a water break.

Bloomfield Superintendent of Schools Sal Goncalves received the 2026 Educational Leader of the Year award. It was awarded by the N.J. Association of Educational Leaders. Goncalves is retiring from the district on Jun. 30. Joseph Fleres will serve as superintendent starting Jul. 1.

Students in grades 4-12 can register for Montclair Film’s summer academy program, scheduled to start Jul. 6. Attendees will learn about the fundamentals of filmmaking and produce films together. The program ends Aug. 21. Registration is available online.

Essex County residents can complete a pre-test for English for Speakers of Other Languages conversation-level classes on May 28 at Maplewood library’s Hilton Branch. Registration is available online. Essex House, a restaurant and banquet hall in West Orange, will be demolished and replaced by a mixed-use building. It will have a commercial ground floor and 95 residential units, with 19 set aside for affordable housing. It is unclear when the restaurant will be demolished.

New Jersey local police officers will increase enforcement of seatbelt safety laws through May 31 as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign. Police checkpoints and presence will increase on N.J. roads. Seatbelt violations can result in a summons and $46 fine.
