REGIONAL NEWS
New Jersey’s Attorney General Matt Platkin issued a scam alert about fraudulent text messages and phone calls residents may receive from people impersonating SNAP representatives. The messages ask recipients to provide EBT card numbers and PINs to unlock benefits, verify SNAP eligibility, or help recipients obtain benefits. Scammers may ask for banking information and Social Security numbers, or require a fee for assistance. Platkin said SNAP assistance from the government is free and residents should verify incoming text messages and phone calls. A list of ways to avoid SNAP scams is available online.
