N.J. landlords must disclose lead risks to tenants, state law says
From New Jersey Monitor.
New Jersey landlords must disclose the presence of lead water lines to current and prospective tenants, according to a new law signed by Acting Gov. Tahesha Way on Sep. 19. The law also requires landlords to disclose whether the unit is old enough to contain lead piping and provide notices within the least three years that found lead levels exceeding acceptable rates. It allows residents to request their utility provider to test their water for lead. Under the law, the state departments of health, community affairs, and environmental protection have six months to develop a notice informing residents about lead exposure risks and ways to protect themselves. Landlords must inform tenants of their property’s lead risk 90 days after the departments draft the notice.
