REGIONAL NEWS
A federal N.J. judge extended an order blocking the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent U.S. resident and Columbia University student, until the case’s hearing, according to court documents. Immigration agents arrested Khalil on Mar. 8 and told him his green card will be revoked, claiming that his criticisms of Israel could undermine U.S. foreign policy. Khalil is not facing any criminal charges. Federal government officials who ordered Khalil’s arrest have not alleged that Khalil broke any laws. Legal experts warn that, if successful, the government could use Khalil’s case as a framework to deport people over protected speech while not charging them with a crime. U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz will determine the constitutionality of Khalil’s arrest at one of N.J.’s federal courts on Apr. 8.
