LOCAL NEWS

Ironbound residents raised concerns to Newark’s planning board over an approved development project’s potential to generate pollution and congestion in their neighborhood. The development project at 31-39 Jefferson St. and 450-466 Market St. consists of four skyscrapers, two of which would be 26-stories and 30-stories high, and total to 1,408 apartment units with 20% labeled as affordable. Residents who attended the meeting also raised concerns over the project’s height, lack of trees and open space, and high rent prices. The site’s developer, Chess Builders LLC, held two community meetings in Ironbound last year, when some residents shared a need for a healthcare facility at each building. Chess’ lawyer, Jennifer Carrillo-Perez, said that it is still being considered.
