Drug-related deaths in Essex County and N.J. dropped by 38% in the first half of 2024 when compared to 2022, according to data from the N.J. Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner. Overdose deaths have been declining in N.J. for three years, which has been attributed to public education about addiction, increased access to life-saving resources like clean needles, drug testing kits, and overdose reversal-agent Narcan.
