How to find abortion resources in New Jersey
Here is how to find an abortion provider, get financial or other support, and spot anti-abortion centers in Essex County and New Jersey.
Abortion is legal under New Jersey state law. But with more than 50 anti-abortion centers disguised as health clinics, it may be challenging for people to find the reproductive health care they need.
The Jersey Bee produced this guide to help those seeking abortion resources in Essex County and New Jersey, including where to find an abortion provider, how to pay for abortion costs, and how to spot anti-abortion centers.
Where to find an abortion provider
You can find a verified abortion provider on AbortionFinder.org, a database of more than 750 abortion service providers across the country. More than 30 telehealth providers listed support New Jersey residents but note that they require an in-state mailing address.
TIP: Every provider offers different services. Ask providers what services they offer, languages they speak, appointment availability, insurance eligibility, funding support, expected costs, and what to expect during a visit.

How to get financial support for an abortion in New Jersey
Several organizations can help you navigate additional support, including financial or legal assistance.
The National Network of Abortion Funds recommends checking if your insurance covers abortion as a benefit. “If abortion is covered, ask for an in-network clinic and make an appointment,” the Network’s website states.
If you need financial assistance for your abortion in New Jersey, discuss payment options and additional financial assistance opportunities with your provider.
The New Jersey Abortion Access Fund (NJAAF) works directly with several clinics to help fund abortions. They include:
- Cherry Hill Women’s Center, Cherry Hill, N.J., 856-667-5910
- Metropolitan Medical Associates, Englewood, N.J., 201-567-0522
- Pilgrim Medical Center, Montclair, N.J., 973-746-1500
- Women’s Choice, Hackensack, N.J., 201-489-2266
If you’re interested in scheduling an appointment with any of these clinics, contact the clinic directly and mention you will be seeking funding from the New Jersey Abortion Access Fund. NJAAF does not distribute funds directly to patients.
NJAAF states that there are no eligibility requirements for funding other than being a New Jersey resident or seeking services in the state.
TIP: AbortionFinder.org also provides a list of organizations that can offer financial, travel, medical, legal, and emotional support.
How to spot an anti-abortion center in New Jersey
In New Jersey, there are almost twice as many anti-abortion centers as actual abortion clinics. Often backed by religious ministries, they resemble health clinics and are commonly known as crisis pregnancy centers.
New Jersey’s Attorney General Matthew Platkin issued a consumer alert in 2022 to help people spot anti-abortion centers and ask questions so they can find the healthcare they need.
What do anti-abortion centers look like?
- A website, a call center, an app, or a physical location that looks like or is located near a clinic or doctor’s office.
- A name that is similar to that of a health care provider, including words like “care,” “health,” “pregnancy,” “resource,” and “choice.”
- Offer free services (including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and adoption information) or supplies (including diapers and baby clothes) to individuals seeking abortion or reproductive health care services.
- Offer limited “counseling” services without providing complete or accurate information regarding all options for reproductive health care, including abortion.
- Postpone or reschedule appointments to delay individuals’ access to abortion care.
- Pressure individuals to delay an abortion or continue a pregnancy, including by providing false or misleading information about the safety and legality of abortion care.
Questions to ask to spot anti-abortion centers
- Does this center provide abortions? If so, what type – medical or surgical?
- If you do provide abortions, how much does treatment cost? Does the center accept health insurance or Medicaid?
- If you don’t provide abortion care yourselves, do you provide referrals to a provider where people can find abortion care?
- If I come in for a visit, will I be seen by a licensed medical professional? What kind? (You can check the status of a healthcare provider’s license in New Jersey here. A list of licensed healthcare facilities in New Jersey can be found here.)
- How will my health information and service be protected and kept private?
