South Orange-Maplewood school board candidate forum planned on Oct. 9 in-person and online. The forum begins at 7:30 p.m. at 525 Academy St. in Maplewood. Seven candidates are running for three vacant board of education seats. There will be two more SOMA school board candidate forums this month.

The Village Green
Maplewood-area residents can meet Olympic athletes Jackie Dubrovich and Tierna Davidson on Oct. 15 at Maplewood library’s Hilton Branch. The event is from 4-5:30 p.m. Dubrovich is a Maplewood resident and Olympic fencer. Davidson is a South Orange resident and soccer player. Both are gold medalists. The event is free.

Columbia High School Home and School Association seeks deodorant donations for students. Deodorant can be purchased through the HSA’s Amazon Wishlist. Pick-up can be arranged by email.

Story time for toddlers planned by South Orange library on Oct. 15. The event is from 11-11:45 a.m. at the Skate House, 5 Mead St. Registration is required. Adults must accompany children.

Marshall Elementary School PTA seeks donations for its Walk and Move-a-Thon Fundraiser scheduled for Oct. 15. Donations can be made by lap or by a fixed amount. All funds support the PTA.

Gala and fundraiser celebrating integration planned by South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race on Oct. 17 in South Orange. The event is from 7-11 p.m. at Orange Lawn Tennis Club, 305 N Ridgewood Rd. It will honor Ellen Davenport and Lori Brown Mirabal. There will be entertainment from Essex Funk Collective, dancing, and food. Registration is required. Tickets are available online for purchase.

South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race
University Hospital in Newark and its unionized nurses are in contract negotiations, with nurses demanding lowered nurse-to-patient staffing ratios and fair wages and benefits. According to the Health Professionals and Allied Employees Local 5089, there are 15-20 patients assigned to one nurse and the proposed 4-to-1 ratio would help retain healthcare workers and improve patient outcomes.

International Longshoremen’s Association, a major union for U.S. dockworkers, reached a tentative deal with port operators to increase wages 61% and extend existing contracts to Jan. 15 following a three-day strike. Dockworkers went to strike over pay increases and concerns around automation. It was the first by East and Gulf Coast dockworkers since 1977 and it shut down 14 ports.
