In Essex County, the number of reported COVID cases have doubled since early June from 87 to 176 as new variants spread throughout the U.S., state data from Jun. 8 and Jul. 6 shows. The group of strains is a subvariant of Omicron known as “FLiRT,” and can show up in a broad range of symptoms, including nausea, runny nose, and a cough, according to Stephanie Silvera, epidemiologist at Montclair State University. Silvera said that this strain is more contagious than others and people should mask to reduce transmission.
