Newark will pay $800,000 to settle a civil rights suit filed by a man who was falsely arrested for four robberies in 2015. The settlement follows a state Supreme Court ruling in March 2022 that rejected the city’s motion to dismiss the case based on qualified immunity, a legal principle that gives police officers and government officials personal liability protections.
