REGIONAL NEWS

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has voiced support for legislation that will enforce tighter regulation on data centers, citing concerns over their impacts on energy consumption, water supply, and community quality of life. The proposed plan, which seeks to promote accountability and transparency within the industry while fostering the state’s leadership in artificial intelligence innovation, consists of four main components. These include requiring data centers to shoulder costs for grid upgrades due to their energy consumption, requiring these centers to report energy and water usage biannually, the development of a statewide standard for agreements between municipalities and data centers, and finally, the stipulation for data centers to employ local trade workers at prevailing wages. The state plans to aid towns in negotiating community investments with developers, such as additional facilities and resources which could potentially mitigate noise and pollution issues.
