More than 1,000 people protested against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s purchase of a Roxbury warehouse on Feb. 28 along Route 46. The 470,000-square-foot warehouse at 1879 Route 46 will be used as an immigrant processing center, marking the third detention facility for migrants in N.J. The other two are privately-owned jails in Elizabeth and Newark. The warehouse’s current owner, Dalfen Industrial, made the sale despite township and community opposition. Roxbury town officials said it offered Dalfen Industrial tax breaks to redevelop the property as a way to avoid the sale. Council members say an ICE facility will strain sewer and water lines, and place more burden on fire, police, and EMS personnel. Roxbury town officials said they plan to challenge the purchase in court in an attempt to halt its development.
