Immigrant advocacy groups raised concerns about the efficacy of Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s online portal where people can upload videos of their interactions with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Groups such as American Friends Service Committee are concerned about how the portal will inform people of immigration agents in their towns and urge Sherrill to provide stronger protections for immigrants. The portal was published to identify uses of excessive force, warrantless searches or arrests, racial profiling, wrongful detentions, interference with voting, or other civil rights violations. It is meant to identify misconduct and trends among ICE officers. The portal is available at nj.gov/knowyourrights. The website also includes information about constitutional rights and free legal services.
