Montclair issued a scam alert about an email falsely posing as Montclair planning department and requests payment from residents and businesses. People who received this email should not open links or attachments, reply, send payment, or share sensitive information. People can verify emails from Montclair by calling the municipal clerk.

Community meeting with Montclair’s Fourth Ward Councilor Aminah Toler planned on Nov. 10. It begins at 6:30 p.m. at Montclair fire headquarters. It will discuss town updates, information about Lackawanna Plaza, and parks. There will be a Q&A session.

Newark renamed the corner of Spruce and Quitman Streets to honor Blonnie Watson. Watson served as member-at-large, vice president, and president of the Essex County Board of Commissioners from 1997-2014. Watson also served on Newark’s zoning board and represented the 29th Legislative District, which includes Essex and Hudson Counties.

“Skills Day for Perinatal Visiting Nurses” planned with Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern NJ on Nov. 11 in Secaucus. It is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 150 Meadowlands Parkway. The program will review ways to conduct home visits for birthing parents newborns, including maternal and newborn assessment, infant feeding challenges, emergencies, and community resources and referrals. Enrollment is $125. Tickets are available online. Scholarships can be requested by email.

Gov. Phil Murphy released $42.5 million to N.J.’s six largest food banks to purchase more food as more than 800,000 N.J. residents have not received SNAP benefits this November. Murphy also declared a state of emergency on Nov. 1 in response to the pause in food aid funds. It came hours after two federal judges ruled that the Trump administration must continue to fund SNAP by using contingency funds during the federal government shutdown. It is not yet clear if EBT cards will be loaded this month or how much money will be allotted. New Jersey residents can find food assistance and related updates through the New Jersey Food Council’s website, Linktr.ee/SNAPNJ. Essex County residents can find food using The Jersey Bee’s food resources page, Jerseybee.org/food.
