East Orange youth in grades 8-12 can share feedback to design the library’s book club. Feedback and interest in the program are accepted through an online survey.

Solidarity potluck planned with University of Orange on Oct. 27 in Orange. The potluck is from 6-8 p.m. at the HUUB, 35 Cleveland St. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish and a friend. Registration not required.

“Spooky Spiotta” planned on Oct. 26 in South Orange. It is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spiotta Park. Attendees are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. There will be activities for children. Free admission.

Author talk with Camila Gonzalez planned with North Jersey Community Research Initiative on Oct. 23 in Newark. It is from 5-7 p.m. at The Pride Center of Newark, 17 Academy St. Gonzalez will discuss her book, “Una Eva Atrapada en las Costillas de Adán.” There will be HIV testing at the event.

Montclair YMCA fundraiser gala is scheduled for Nov. 6 in Clifton. Ticket sales will benefit the YMCA’s financial assistance fund. The gala begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Valley Regency, 1129 Valley Rd. Tickets are on sale through Oct. 27.

Attendees will visit local shops, restaurants, and other locations to learn about Palestinian culture and hear from community members. Donations will fund medical aid in Palestine. United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested 3,201 people in N.J. from Jan. 21 to Jul. 29, according to data by the Deportation Data Project, a group of academics and lawyers who obtain immigration data through the a federal law that allows the public to request government files, known as the Freedom of Information Act. That number is a 110% increase from the same time period in 2024, where the total number of ICE arrests in N.J. was 1,526. ICE agents arrested 2,959 people in N.J. by the end of 2024.
The arrests come after President Donald Trump’s executive orders signed Jan. 20 to ramp up immigration enforcement. The Jersey Bee has immigration resources at jerseybee.org/community/immigrants. Resources are available in English and Spanish.
