Rutgers Young Democratic Socialists of America launched an online petition urging university officials to refuse to cooperate with ICE and National Guard troops in enforcement of the Trump administration’s deportation policies. The petition refers to this demand as establishing a sanctuary campus designation. Additional petition demands include a commitment to protect funding for all higher education departments, protect the free speech, right to protest, and academic freedom of campus workers and students, among other policies. The petition was published after students of far-right group Turning Point USA-Rutgers doxxed and harassed Rutgers professor Mark Bray for his book on anti-fascism. Bray said he fled to Spain after receiving death threats that included his home address.
