High school students in South Orange and Maplewood can volunteer to help artist Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar build a refugee tent. Installation is on Aug. 13 from 12-4 p.m. at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center. Volunteers will earn community service hours. Pizza provided. Students must sign up by Aug. 6.

Residents can attend a people’s forum on home energy with N.J. Environmental Alliance on Jul. 31 in Newark. It is from 5:30-8 p.m. at Newark Workforce Development Board, 375 McCarter Hwy. Attendees will learn about cost-saving ways to reduce home energy expenses. There will be information on health risks associated with gas appliances and state resources for lowering energy costs. Attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a new air conditioning unit. Dinner provided. Registration is required.

Preschool Enrollment Fair planned with La Casa de Don Pedro is rescheduled to Aug. 5 in Newark. La Casa’s preschool programs are free for children up to age 5. The fair is from 3-6 p.m. at 202 First St. Attendees will tour classrooms, meet instructors, and learn about available programs.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order directing state agencies to review the impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” on state budgets and programs. OBBBA is a federal spending law signed July 2025 that cuts funding for Medicaid, Medicare, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Murphy’s executive order will require state agencies to evaluate how the spending law will affect N.J. residents and provide recommendations to address its impacts. By Oct. 1, agencies must submit to the governor’s office an assessment of the impacts and recommended legislative measures. By Nov. 15, all state agencies must provide the governor’s office with a list of recommended non-legislative measures. The executive order took effect on Jul. 23.

New Jersey residents can attend a webinar with N.J. Citizen Action discussing healthcare access amid federal spending cuts on Aug. 5.
