REGIONAL NEWS

Three N.J. State Police unions filed lawsuits against state Attorney General Matt Platkin to block his investigation into whether officers intentionally slowed traffic enforcement upon the release of a report that revealed racial profiling in stops. A December 2024 New York Times report found that traffic violation enforcement dropped 61% while motor vehicle crashes increased 16% between July 2023 and March 2024. Traffic enforcement slowdown began one week after a July 2023 analysis found evidence that N.J. police were more likely to stop Black and Latino motorists, search their vehicles, and ask them to leave their vehicles between 2009 and 2021. State Police union officials are requesting a state judge to dismiss the five subpoenas Platkin issued in April that ordered the agency’s documents and court appearance.
