Community members and immigrant rights groups will attend the Union County Board of Commissioners’ Jul. 24 meeting to urge commissioners to halt potential plans to reopen the county jail as an ICE detention center. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at 10 Elizabethtown Plaza in Elizabeth. Residents have attended previous meetings urging commissioners to oppose bids from private prison companies and reject proposals for an ICE detention center. Meeting attendees, including groups like Make the Road NJ and NJ Alliance for Immigrant Justice, proposed different ways to repurpose the jail to meet community needs: a homeless shelter, mental health office, workforce development site, or educational programming space. The county must release a request for proposals, which will define the limits of the facility’s use for bidders and will require public input under state law.

REGIONAL NEWS
Ironbound Community Corporation is suing the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission over its approval to construct a fourth power plant in Newark’s Ironbound section. The board voted on the application in June despite years of concerns raised by community members, environmentalists, and municipal leaders. The lawsuit against PVSC was filed by Earthjustice on behalf of ICC. It claims that the power plant will further pollute Newark and that the PVSC failed to consider alternatives to the power plant and community feedback. The $180 million backup power project is the first to be approved since N.J.’s 2023 environmental justice law that intends to block similar construction in communities burdened by polluting infrastructure.
