Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is suing interim U.S. Attorney for N.J. Alina Habba, claiming false arrest, malicious prosecution, and defamation over a trespassing charge made against him that was later dropped. Baraka was arrested on May 9 after protesting outside of Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center, and trying to gain access to the jail. He was charged with one count of trespassing, according to documents filed in federal District Court in New Jersey, and was released a few hours after his arrest. Federal Magistrate Judge Andre Espinosa dismissed the charge in May. The lawsuit says Baraka is seeking monetary damages from Habba.
