REGIONAL NEWS

Spectrum cable and Optimum customers will lose access to news broadcast channels News 12 and NY1 on Jun. 30, according to recent filings with the state Public Service Commission. The two cable providers will stop carrying each other’s 24-hour news stations because of an industry dispute between their parent companies, Charter Communications and Altice USA. Customers should receive notice of the changes and have the option to downgrade or terminate their service at no charge within 30 days of getting notice, the filings said.

New Jersey is set to receive $450 million from chemical corporation 3M in a settlement related to decades of PFAS, or toxic “forever chemicals,” pollution across the state. PFAS, which resists breaking down over time, has been linked to health issues, including birth defects and cancers. This settlement addresses 3M’s release of PFAS throughout the state, and cites the Chambers Works plant in Salem County as the center of its liability. Chamber Works, now mostly abandoned, was the largest manufacturing site operated by chemical company DuPont and had released more than 100 million pounds of hazardous waste into the soil, air, and water, a 2016 environmental analysis shows. The settlement money will be used toward environmental remediation, improving drinking water quality in Salem County and statewide, and restoring damaged natural resources, according to state officials.
