A plan to renovate 200 temporary housing units near Newark Penn Station for homeless individuals is underway, according to city and state officials. More than 2,000 people were experiencing homelessness in Newark last year, which makes up 64% of homelessness in Essex County, a 2024 Monarch Housing Associates report shows. Newark Alliance and NJ Transit’s recently announced initiative, “Gateway to Hope,” will prioritize housing for homeless individuals, hiring three-person medical teams stationed at Newark Penn, and opening a drop-in resource center in downtown Newark, named the Sheila Y. Oliver Drop-in Center. The program’s start date is not yet announced.

Attendees will learn about constitutional rights, how to exercise those rights, and what to do when rights are violated.
