Community meeting discussing Orange’s Urban Enterprise Zone program planned in Orange on Apr. 16. It is from 7-9 p.m. at City Council Chambers. The meeting will discuss the city’s five-year plan, which is currently being developed with city planning firm Nishuane Group. The Urban Enterprise Zone program incentivizes businesses to open in Orange with the goal of stimulating growth. People can share their input on the plan at the meeting.

Six N.J. candidates for governor will participate in a forum at NJPAC on Apr. 16 in Newark. Candidate attendees include Ras Baraka, Jon Bramnick, Steven Fulop, Mikie Sherrill, Sean Spiller, and Steve Sweeney. They will answer questions about immigration, voting rights, and other topics related to racial and social justice. It begins at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required and admission is free. The Jersey Bee is a co-host of this event.

New Jersey State Police must process all known criminal expungement orders that are older than four months by Jun. 1, according to a lawsuit settlement between the agency and the state Office of the Public Defender. Expungement is the removal of an individual’s criminal records. The lawsuit was filed in 2023 when N.J. State Police fell two years behind in processing more than 46,000 expungement orders. Nearly 2,000 orders have been waiting review by county prosecutors with the most backlogged cases filed in Essex County, according to the public defender’s office. Settlement terms also includes an online portal where people can track the status of their expungement, a goal to resolve new expungement orders within 90 days, and publicly posted reports of expungement processing numbers within an 18-month period.
