Newark will hold a special election for the vacant Central Ward seat in November, judge says

Newark will hold a special election for the vacant Central Ward seat in November, according to a Superior Court ruling. Newark planned to hold the council election simultaneously with the school board election on Apr. 15 to avoid additional election costs and potential confusion about more election dates, but was denied. Reasons for the judge’s decision is not yet clear. The Central Ward seat has been vacant since September 2024, when LaMonica McIver won the special election to fill Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s congressional position in N.J.’s 10th district.
