Montclair residents launch online petition urging improved living conditions at Union Gardens

From Montclair Local.

Montclair residents launched an online petition urging Montclair Town Council and property management group Arco Management to address reports of rodent infestations, faulty plumbing, mold, and other code violations at Union Gardens Apartments, 50 Greenwood Ave. Tenants reported that the Arco is not effectively responding to their concerns, which include poor air quality and ventilation. Residents said that second-hand smoke, a broken HVAC system, and absent exhaust fan for gas stoves have magnified chronic respiratory conditions, like asthma. According to township spokesperson Matthew Amaral, Montclair Town Council is in preliminary discussions with the planning board chairs and township attorney to address structural issues at the building. Specific plans are not clear, but Amaral said that the town will seek community input for solutions. Montclair residents who suspect that their apartment is out of code can file a complaint with Montclair Code Enforcement by email or phone.
