Maplewood must build or rehabilitate 236 affordable housing units by 2035 to meet new housing requirements determined by N.J. Department of Community Affairs under a state law that passed in March 2024. Calculations include numbers for existing units in need of repair, 20, and the number of new units needed based on population trends, 216. Maplewood is required to accept the housing calculations by Jan. 31, 2025 and adopt housing plans by Jun. 30, 2025 to show how and where affordable housing will be built.

Small business street fair planned by South Orange Downtown on Nov. 30 to Dec. 1. It is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Village Plaza. There will be several business vendors, music, and holiday-themed entertainment. Limited supply of $10 off $50 coupons available on site at the South Orange Downtown tent.

Zumba class planned by Women’s Club of West Orange on Nov. 23. It begins at 10 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church of West Orange. A $10 donation is required for admission.

New Jersey Community Research Initiative in Newark offers testing, counseling, support, and treatment for individuals at risk of or living with HIV/AIDS. Testing and counseling are free. Consultations are available by phone or text in Spanish and English.

Children and adults can enter in Essex County Environmental Center’s 2024 Forest Friends Feeder Contest by Dec. 11. Participants must create an edible wetland wildlife feeder for the center’s outdoor exhibit. Projects must be dropped off on Dec. 20. Registration is required.

Amir Jones will fill a vacancy left by Armando Fontoura as Essex County sheriff, according to official 2024 general election results from the Essex County Clerk’s office. Fontoura, who has been county sheriff since 1991, announced his retirement in March. Jones won the general election with 212,052 votes. He has served as deputy sheriff in Essex County since 2012.

New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs issued new affordable housing requirements for each municipality, totaling more than 146,000 housing units over the next decade. Affordable housing unit requirements are based on a formula that accounts for vacant land, median household income, and other factors, according to the state. A list of each municipality’s housing obligations is available online.
