REGIONAL NEWS
Efforts to further contain a 3,000-acre wildfire in West Milford is likely to be complicated by strong winds and low humidity projected for this week, said Christopher Franek, a Forest Fire Service fire warden. The Jennings Creek fire is 20% contained as of Tuesday and has burned 5,000 acres along the N.J.-N.Y. border. Since Oct. 1, the state Forest Fire Service responded to 537 wildfires that have burned 4,500 acres in total across N.J., including Livingston and Pompton Lakes in North Jersey. Wildfire season in N.J. is typically from mid-March to mid-May, but due to climate change effects, has been extended year-round under record dry and hot conditions. A burn ban has been in place since Oct. 29 and state officials urge residents to not start fires or use grills.

Some N.J. homeowners impacted by Hurricane Ida will receive foreclosure protections under a new bill Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law. It will put some affected homeowners’ mortgage payments on hold for one year in addition to safeguards against foreclosure in that time. The state Department of Community Fairs has 90 days to create an online application for relief and protections and, once available, eligible homeowners will have 30 days to apply.
