Chess club meeting for youth of all skill levels planned by Maplewood library on Oct. 16 in the Hilton branch. Chess is from 6-7 p.m. There will be tutors and free chess boards for use. Registration is recommended.

Free food truck festival planned by United Way of Greater Newark on Oct. 19 in Maplewood. The event is from 12-5 p.m. at Memorial Park. There will be food, activities, live entertainment, and a small business marketplace.

Free pop-up performance by Mark Murphy’s Music student band planned on Oct. 19 in South Orange. The performance is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spiotta Park.

“Ladies Night Out Downtown” planned by South Orange on Oct. 17. Stores and restaurants will be open between 6-9 p.m. for the town-wide event. Attendees can purchase raffle passports for $10 at Spiotta Park for a chance to win prizes. Sales will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Fund.

“R.E.D. Gala” and fundraiser to support literacy in Newark planned by Urban League of Essex County on Oct. 16 in Belleville. The event, scheduled from 6 p.m. at Nanina’s in the Park, 540 Mill St., will discuss the Urban League’s plans to launch a literacy center to fill education gaps in Newark. The literacy center will offer free reading tutoring, interactive writing and theater training, and professional and parent resources. Tickets are available online for purchase.

Gov. Phil Murphy promised to advance a statewide bill lowering the voting age to 16 for school board elections at Vote 16 Youth Summit hosted by the N.J. Institute for Social Justice. Murphy first announced his support for the bill in January 2024, one day before Newark City Council passed a law allowing 16-year-olds to vote in school board races. State officials at the summit promised to the move the bill through the Legislature this year. If passed, N.J. would be the first state to extend voting rights to people younger than 18.
