Free eye screenings planned by Newark Emergency Services for Families on Oct. 9 in Newark. Screenings begin at 9 a.m. at 982 Broad St. Appointments accepted online.

Newark Emergency Services for Families

Newark plans to apply for a federally funded grant that would identify and remove affordable housing barriers, including outdated zoning and land use policies, gaps in available resources, and insufficient infrastructure. Funds should be used for developing improved housing, policy plans, and affordable housing. A public hearing discussing the application is planned for Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. in Newark City Hall. A 15-day public comment period ends Oct. 14.

“College and Career Readiness” virtual information session for families planned by Newark public schools on Oct. 9. The session begins at 5 p.m. Attendees will learn about the SchooLinks program that is designed to help students plan for post-graduation. Registration is required.

East Orange-area fitness instructors can apply to help lead the city’s fall fitness event scheduled for Oct. 19. The event will take place at Columbian Park. A total of 10 instructors will be contacted by Oct. 8. Applications accepted online.

Free author talk with Barry Sonnenfeld planned by Maplewood library on Oct. 9. Sonnenfeld will be discussing his upcoming release of “Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time” with New York Times book review editor Gilbert Cruz at 7:30 p.m. at Maplewood Town Hall. Registration is not required. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Zufall Health, a nonprofit located in West Orange that provides primary care to low-income N.J. residents, expands treatment for alcohol and opioid use disorders. The expanded treatment uses medications to normalize brain chemistry to block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids and lessen its cravings. It is offered in combination with counseling and behavioral health support.

New Jersey is represented by three women in U.S. Congress for the first time in history, according to the Center for American Women and Politics. The state’s 10th, 11th, and 12th Districts are represented by LaMonica McIver, Mikie Sherrill, and Bonnie Watson Coleman. McIver, who represents parts of Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties, is the first Black woman to represent the 10th District and the second to represent the state. She was elected during a special election cycle this fall, and will fill the congressional seat until Nov. 5.
