REGIONAL NEWS
Family Connects NJ, a free in-home nurse visitation program for new parents, is expanding its services to cumulatively reach 11 counties by 2025. It is already offered in Essex County. It is designed to reduce maternal mortality and birth disparities in N.J. where Black women are seven times more likely to die while pregnant, giving birth, or postpartum, than white mothers, a state analysis shows. The program requires a nurse to visit the family’s home two weeks after birth, check the mother and newborn’s health, and provide resources for breastfeeding, mental health support, food, and housing. It is available to all new parents regardless of income, insurance, or immigration status.
