Baird Center parking lot will be under construction starting Sep. 30 in South Orange. Paving will be complete by Oct. 11. The Baird and its programs will continue as scheduled.
Friends of South Orange Public Library
Community members and local businesses can submit an advertisement in SOMA Coalition on Race’s event program by Oct. 4. Programs will be distributed at SOMA Coalition on Race’s integration celebration on Oct. 17 in South Orange. Advertisements and personal messages for placement in the program are accepted by email.

South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race
Maplewood-area residents can receive transportation, relocation, shelter, and documentation assistance through a township partnership with Collaborative Support Programs of N.J., a non-profit that provides community-based services. CSFPNJ staff are available at Maplewood library’s Main Branch from 12-2 p.m. on Saturdays to assist residents with social service applications, including affordable housing, rental and utility assistance, employment, health insurance, food stamps, WIC and disability benefits. Appointments are not required.
Maplewood Township
Community mosaic installation workshops planned by SOMA Coalition on Race starting Oct. 6 in Maplewood. Workshops are from 3:15-5:15 p.m. on Sundays through Oct. 27. Participants will learn how to use different materials to create a visual representation of their family heritage. Designs will be displayed on stone pedestals at South Orange Avenue’s flagpole. Registration is required.

Story time for ages 1-3 planned by Maplewood library on Oct. 7 at the Hilton Branch. The event is from 10:30-10:50 a.m. and includes stories, rhymes, and movement activities. An accompanying adult must be present.

Maplewood residents can sign up by Oct. 1 to participate in a neighborhood garage sale scheduled for Oct. 19. A rain date is scheduled for Oct. 20. Interested residents must register online.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection plans public hearing on Oct. 1 to discuss Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission application to construct a fourth fossil fuel plant in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood. The meeting will be held at Sport Club Portuguese,55 Prospect St., in Newark from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Attendance is available in-person and online, registration to speak during public comment is encouraged.

New Jersey Black Empowerment Coalition to host inaugural “NJ Empowerment Awards and Fundraiser” at South Orange Performing Arts Center Oct. 10. The event begins at 6 p.m. to honor people promoting racial justice and inclusive democracy through public service, DEI advocacy, policymaking, and business. Area honorees include Newark law firm Souder, Shabazz & Woolridge and Jean-Pierre Brutus of New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. Tickets are $125 and include complimentary drinks and appetizers.
