Maplewood and South Orange residents can bring their cats and dogs to a free rabies clinic on Sep. 18. The clinic is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Essex Fire Department Maplewood Station. Pet licenses for 2024 will be available. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier.

South Orange and Maplewood residents in grades 1-8 can register for recreational basketball starting Sep. 19. The season is from December to March. Teams play once a week at South Orange Middle School or South Orange Recreation’s Baird gymnasium. Registration is available online.

“Small Businesses, Big Challenges” panel planned by SOMA Chamber of Commerce on Sep. 19 in Maplewood. The event is begins at 6:30 p.m. at The Woodland, 60 Woodland Rd. It will include speakers discussing grant and loan programs for small businesses, mentorship and education opportunities, and how to conduct business in town. It is free for members and $10 for non-members.

“Vanilla: A Global History” book talk with author Rosa Abreu-Runkel planned by Durand-Hedden House and Garden on Sep. 22 in Maplewood. The event is from 1-4 p.m. at 523 Ridgewood Rd. It will discuss the history of vanilla and include garden tours. Registration is required.

Road work in South Orange is expected to start Sep. 16 on South Orange Avenue. Milling and paving will be done from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Prospect Street to the Newark border. The project is planned to end Sep. 19.

Cornhole tournament planned by West Orange Elks on Sep. 22 in West Orange. The event begins at 1 p.m. at 424 Main St. Two-person teams are required and the fee is $20 per team. Registration is in-person at 12 p.m.

“Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration” planned by Essex County Commissioners on Sep. 18 in Newark. The event, scheduled from 6 p.m. at the Essex County Hall of Records in room 506, will honor community members and organizations. It will also feature a musical performance by the Latin Jazz Band of Newark’s Arts High School. Light refreshments will follow the celebration.

Children ages 2-5 can register for Essex County Environmental Center’s “Little Explorers” program Sep. 23 in Roseland. The event is scheduled from 10-11 a.m. for ages 2-3, and 3-4 p.m. for ages 2-5. The program introduces children to plants, animals, and natural colors, shapes, and textures. The program fee is $15. Registration is available online. The program runs through Dec. 16.

The Flow Initiative, an advocacy group for menstrual equity, has created an online toolkit and fact sheet for school staff and parents. The toolkit discusses ways to talk about menstrual health with students as free menstrual health products will become available for N.J. public school students in grades 6-12 starting in September.
