Story time for children age 2 planned at Nutley library on Sep. 20. There will be stories, rhymes, music, and crafts at 10:30 a.m. The weekly series ends Dec. 13. Registration is required.

Local author book fair planned at Nutley library on Sep. 21. There will be books for sale and an opportunity to meet authors from 1:30-4 p.m. Books available for all reading levels.

Essex County residents can register for English for Speakers of Other Languages online classes on Sep. 19 at Maplewood library. Registration is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the library’s Hilton Branch. Registration is also from 1-3 p.m. at 90 Broad St. in Bloomfield on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Beginner and intermediate classes are from October to December. Students must show two forms of ID and a Gmail account to register. Registration is $25.

Gov. Phil Murphy recently appointed George Helmy to represent N.J. in the U.S. Senate following the resignation of Sen. Bob Menendez. Helmy will hold Menendez’s previous seats on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. He will serve as senator until the results of the November general election is decided, with Rep. Andy Kim and Curtis Bashaw contesting the seat.
