Chess group meeting for youth planned by Maplewood library on Aug. 27 in the Hilton Branch. The group is designed for students in grades 6-12 and all skill levels. It will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Registration is recommended.

“Makers Shopping Spree” market event planned by Newark on Aug. 24. Retailers and artists at Newark Makerhoods will sell their products from 12-3 p.m. at Krueger-Scott Mansion, 601 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Farmers market voucher distribution for eligible seniors planned by Essex County senior services on Aug. 22 in Montclair. The distribution is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Glenfield Park. Attendees must bring proof of income and photo ID.

“BARKtoberfest” pet adoption event planned by Turtle Back Zoo on Sep. 7 in West Orange. Attendees can adopt dogs and cats from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Berson Family Center Parking Lot. There will also be a pet costume contest, vendors, and food trucks.

Part-time college students in New Jersey will now have access to discounted fares through NJ Transit’s expanded Student Pass program. The upgrade allows students buying monthly passes in September, October, and November to receive a free pass in December. Eligibility requires enrollment in at least two courses at a participating college or university, currently including over 70 institutions in New Jersey, New York City, and Philadelphia.
