“Boogie Woogie Babies” movement class for ages 1-5 planned by Maplewood library on Aug. 15 at the Hilton Branch. The movement class begins at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Statewide government job fair planned by N.J. Civil Service Commission on Aug. 15 in Union. Attendees will meet more than 30 potential employers hiring for state and local departments, agencies, colleges, and universities from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kean University. Registration is required.

Projects exploring N.J.’s history of politics and civics can be submitted to the 2024 N.J. History Conference until Aug. 23. Projects can include conference panels, individual presentations, and lightning sessions. The conference is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Proposals accepted online.

Turtle Back Zoo recently installed butterfly statues at the entrance of its butterfly tent. The butterfly statues are part of the zoo’s Turtle Back Blooms program, which aims to protect pollinators.

Employers in N.J. who try to hide labor violations by threatening workers based on their immigration status can face fines of up to $10,000 under a new state law, effective immediately. It imposes a $1,000 penalty for first-time offenses, a maximum of $5,000 penalty for the second violation, and up to $10,000 for any subsequent violations.
Employees can file a wage claim with the N.J. Department of Labor and Workforce Development to report labor law violations, including unfair pay.

James H. Coleman, Jr. died on Aug. 2. He was 91. Coleman served as the first Black Justice on the N.J. Supreme Court. He served the state’s Supreme Court from December 1994 to May 2003.
