REGIONAL NEWS

Nearly 40% of N.J. workers do not receive protections from the New Jersey Family Leave Act. A Rutgers University study shows that unprotected workers are often low-income, women, and working in education, healthcare, libraries, or service industries. The act only protects N.J. employees who work at organizations with 30 or more employees, have worked for the same employer for at least one year, and have worked at least 1,000 hours in the previous year. Advocacy groups are urging lawmakers to amend eligibility requirements and increase family leave protections for workers at firms with at least five employees and after 90 days of employment.
